Hair growth

On average hair grows about a half inch per month, or 6 inches in a year. However, there are some people who struggle with hair growth or simply want to grow their hair much faster than that. Good news is that the hair experts have given some wonderful tips and strategies for growing out hair faster than the average norm.

1. Eat a Healthy Diet

Hair growth requires an adequate amount of protein, vitamins, and minerals, so aim for a healthy and balanced diet.  You may want to consider taking a multivitamin, as well as reach for foods that are high in vitamin A, B, B-complex, C, and E. Also, choose healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, oats, fish (and other foods high in omega 3), flax seeds, alfalfa, and extra virgin olive oil. In addition, drink plenty of filtered water each day, shooting for 6 to 8 glasses.

2. Massage Your Scalp Daily

Hair experts state that massaging your scalp for just five minutes a day can help your hair grow faster. Not only can it help your hair grow, but it can also increase the thickness of your hair. Good news is that you don’t even have to do this yourself. Ask your partner to do it for you sometimes, and feel free to return the favor.

3. Use Silk Pillowcases

Switch your pillowcases from cotton to silk, as there will be less friction with your hair with the silk pillowcases while you toss and turn at night. This means that there will be less breakage, and more opportunity for each hair to keep growing night after night.

4. Be Careful How Much Heat You Use

If you’re used to blow drying and straightening your hair, never do both on the same day. Too much heat on the hair will cause breakage and damage. One day you may want to blow dry your hair and the next day you could straighten it. Many women will wash their hair at night and let it air dry. Then, in the morning they will straighten it.

5. Air Dry Your Hair

The best way to dry your hair is to let it dry naturally. The reality is that this isn’t always feasible for those who like to shower in the morning and then have to rush off to work or school. But if you can, at least several times a week, let your hair air-dry.

6. Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

The hair experts will tell you that daily hair washing is not necessary for great hair. They’ll also tell you that if you want to grow your hair faster, keep your hair washing to a minimum each week. Perhaps instead of every day you could wash every second, third, or fourth day depending on your level of oil in your hair. If you’re prone to very oil hair after a day or two, consider using a “dry hair” product that helps soak that oil up, so you can extend your wash time.

7. Keep Your Ponytail Loose and Low

If you like wearing ponytails, wear them loose and low. When you pull up a ponytail tight, it can cause breakage around the hairline, which will minimize hair growth.

8. Use a Boar Bristle Brush

Brush your hair daily with a boar bristle brush. Start from the bottom and work your way up to the top. If you’re brushing your hair from the top down, you’re likely ripping a lot of hair out of your scalp. However, if you brush gently from the bottom up, you’ll have less tearing and the brushing will actually create healthier hair follicles to help your hair grow faster.

9. Consider Rinsing with Apple Cider Vinegar

Many people say that rinsing with cold water will help your hair grow faster, but some experts tell you that rinsing with apple cider vinegar is even better. They state that the vinegar will help close the cuticle layer and leave your hair very shiny.

10. Don’t go Blonde

Those that bleach their hair blonde tend to experience more breakage. The hair experts will tell you that if you want to have long hair, resist the urge to go blonde. If you do want to go blonde for a while, then it’s best if you wear a shorter hairstyle.

11. Avoid Permanent Hair Extensions

Surely you can use temporary hair extensions, but if you want to grow your hair fast, resist the urge to use permanent hair extensions. Why? Your hair can rip out at the hairline because of the extra weight.

12. Skip the Trimming for a While

While you may think that you need a hair trim every couple of months to take care of those split ends, many hair experts will tell you that if you’re using the right hair products, you can go six months without a trim. Product suggestions vary, of course, but common recommendations include Tresemme shampoo and repair and protect conditioner.

13. Massage Scalp with Castor Oil

Oils will do your scalp wonders. Mix castor oil with an equal amount of olive or coconut oil and massage it into your scalp. Leave it in your hair for about 30 minutes and then shampoo. The castor oil has wonderful omega-9 fatty acids and vitamin E that will help your hair grow faster naturally.

14. Flip the Hair

Some say that flipping your hair upside down (putting your head down and letting your hair hang down) for about 2 to 4 minutes per day helps it grow faster. The assumption with this is that your circulation improves as you do this, helping your hair follicles to grow hair quicker.

15. Wear a hair mask

Once a month, whip up some eggs and a few drops of an essential oil like lavender or grape seed. Massage it onto your scalp and leave on for 30 minutes. Then, shampoo your hair as usual.
